Fire Sale

Jon Lester and John Farrell talked during batting practice before Wednesday’s game. It wasn’t a secret that Ben Cherington was shopping Lester, it was just a matter of what the southpaw starter would net in return. Cherington didn’t get quite the haul that Jed Hoyer did in his deal with Billy Beane involving Jeff Samardzija, but getting Yoenis Cespedes in return for Lester and Jonny Gomes isn’t anything to sneeze at. Cespedes has one more year on his contract. And the Atheletics might be getting damaged goods. Here’s Lester getting beat up by his teammates in the dugout. Cherington didn’t stop at dealing Lester. John Lackey was sent to the Cardinals for starter Joe Kelly and Allen Craig. Craig is signed through 2018 with a team option. The earliest Kelly is eligible for arbitration is 2016 and for free agency 2018. The uneasy infield situation was settled at last with Stephen Drew being sent to the Yankees for Kelly Johnson. Xander Bogaerts can get sustained time at shortstop, Will Middlebrooks will play at the hot corner, and Dustin Pedroia can be spelled at second base (as if that last thing would ever happen). Andrew Miller got relocated to Fenway South...

Erik the Dead(line Deal)

As the Red Sox put the finishing touches on a topsy-turvy game Tom Caron reported that the team had acquired southpaw starter Erik Bedard from Seattle. The three-team deal broken down: Red Sox receive:Erik Bedard and Josh Fields (from Seattle) Mariners receive:Chih-Hsien Chiang (from Boston)Trayvon Robinson (from Los Angeles) Dodgers receive:Tim Federowicz, Stephen Fife, and Juan Rodriguez (from Boston) Clay Buchholz was placed on the 60-day disabled list because of his lower back pain, casting huge doubts upon his return to baseball this season. Bedard has just returned from his own stint on the disabled list for a sprained left knee. His first start after his return was a disastrous affair against the Rays: 1⅓ innings pitched, 3 hits, 5 earned runs, 4 walks, and 2 strikeouts. In his career he has been successful in the AL East but since 2008 he has pitched in a twirler’s paradise at Safeco in the middling AL West. Perhaps the lefty can return to 2007 form, and the entire team recreate that season along with him. Games such as Sunday’s displayed the character of this team. The Red Sox seemed to rudderlessly drift through the first weeks of the season but now they...

A Coke and a Smile

The Red Sox got the leadoff hitter on base seven out of nine innings but grounded into three double plays. The home team also ran into a couple of outs, one ill-advised and another unlucky. In the seventh inning with Adrian Beltre on first, none out, and the score 4-0 in favor of the Tigers, Bill Hall tried to stretch a single to left into a double and was hosed at second. In the bottom frame of the next inning Victor Martinez knocked a long single off the left field wall. Beltre followed him with a bloop to shallow right that looked catchable enough that Martinez couldn’t commit to taking second. The ball dropped just out of reach of Brennan Boesch’s glove and the catcher was erased from the basepaths. Despite Hall’s gaffe his team halved the deficit in the seventh thanks to Ryan Kalish’s first major league run batted in. In the same play he knocked over his first major league umpire when his shattered bat hit Dan Iassogna. He scored his first major league run on Darnell McDonald’s double in the seventh. In his premier major league at bat in the third Kalish led off with a single...

Frame Thy Fearful Symmetry

I had foreseen the inevitability of David Ortiz’s grand slam. The set-up was all too perfect: the score was 6-1 in favor of the visitors, an erratic closer walked three batters in succession, and the personification of clutch crouched in the box. However, I had also envisaged the local nine coming up short in the bottom of the ninth. It was the story of 2010 writ small: inconsistent pitching allowing just enough runs so that the sputtering offense couldn’t overcome the deficit. To be sure there are individual flashes of brilliance like Ortiz’s grand slam, a number of near no-hitters and perfect games, and a treasure chest of defensive gems. From the start of 2010 the team was never at full strength and yet they were within a stone’s throw of leading the AL East for most of the season. The losses of Dustin Pedroia and Victor Martinez to injury were almost contemporaneous with their team coming within a half-game of first place in the division. Since then the Red Sox have not been able to keep pace with the Yankees or Rays. In an odd season one of the most bizarre plays unfolded in the first. Martinez dropped strike...

You Gagne Some, You Perdu Some

The Jermaine Dye deal died on the vine, the two Sox teams seemingly too far apart on the players involved to even ask the South Side outfielder if he would approve a deal. Perhaps Ken Williams realized he let Tadahito Iguchi go for a song and expected the Red Sox to make up the talent differential. Visions of Jerry Owens playing center proved too horrible for Williams, who probably held out for Jacoby Ellsbury. Thankfully Theo Epstein held his ground and the major deal accomplished was acquiring Eric Gagne from the Rangers for three minor league players. With Mike Timlin ailing, the power arm will prove valuable in the stretch run. Kason Gabbard can be a middle to low end of the rotation starter for most clubs. Moving to Texas might actually help him, given that he performed so well at Fenway, which is actually more of a hitter’s park than Rangers Ballpark this season. David Murphy was blocked by veterans on the big league club and eclipsed by Ellsbury. The move can only be good for the first rounder. Engel Beltre was an international player signed last July at the age of 16. He’s so far away from contributing...

Hoshu [捕手]

Game 105: July 29, 2007 Red Sox 2 L: Daisuke Matsuzaka (12-8) 64-41, 1 game losing streak22-9-4 series record Devil Rays 5 W: Gary Glover (4-3) 39-65, 1 game winning streak9-21-4 series record Highlights: Hoshu is the Japanese word for catcher. The first character [捕] means to catch and the second [手] symbolizes hand. The character for hand is the same used in karate, where it is pronounced te. Doug Mirabelli caught in place of Jason Varitek on Sunday and there wasn’t a perceptible change in Matsuzaka’s effectiveness. He lasted six and one-third inning with a line of eight hits, two earned runs, one walk, and six strikeouts. I’ve been loathe to begin this post because of a flurry of activity in the franchise league I am a part of. Just like the real MLB, we have a trading deadline and I’ve been thinking about the direction of my team. I had traded for Jarrod Saltalamacchia before the season started and now that he was traded in real life to the Texas Rangers I have an extra bat in a scarce position. I did have to give up Adam Wainwright and Johnny Estrada, but in return I received Saltalamacchia,...
