Routed by Rookies

While Derek Jeter was putting the finishing touches on his historic run at shortstop in the Bronx the Red Sox youth movement started what will hopefully be voluminous feats of their own in Boston. Christian Vazquez was a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He went 4-for-4 in the nine hole. In the second inning he knocked the ball off one of the signs above the Green Monster for his first homer in the bigs. With so little to celebrate this season it was wonderful to see such genuine joy in the dugout. Rusney Castillo also had a spectacular offensive evening. The center fielder batted seventh and went 2-for-4. In the third inning with two men on and one out he powered the ball into the first row of the Monster seats. His other hit was a near-homer in the seventh inning. This season Boston has played 19 rookies. The last time the Red Sox came close to that number was 1952, which featured 18 newcomers. That team finished sixth in the American League with a losing record of 76-78. I found 11 of the players on the wonderful site Baseball Almanac. Hal Bevan Milt Bolling Ralph Brickner Dick...

Buffoonery

Balloons and buffoonery are readily available at Fenway Park these days. With two down and the bases loaded Ryan Flaherty tapped the ball to Mike Napoli. Napoli relayed to Xander Bogaerts, who got Steve Pearce out but was taken out by the slide. Bogaerts’s throw was off-target and Joe Kelly couldn’t get a glove on the ball. Nelson Cruz and Chris Davis scored on the muddled play. Your browser does not support iframes. Yoenis Cespedes can be electrifying on the field but sometimes when he is fielding his brain goes into cruise control. The left fielder has tremendous physical gifts but needs to hone his focus on defensive plays. He flubbed a can of corn off Adam Jones’s bat in the seventh inning that led to Alejandro De Aza scoring from third. This came on the heels of David Ross’s throw to second to try to catch De Aza stealing that ended up in the outfield. It’s bad enough when the players err but then fans try to make themselves part of the game. Christian Vazquez made the catch of Jonathan Schoop’s pop-up in foul territory in the eighth inning despite this fan trying to take the ball away from...

2-6-3-4-5-3

Carlos Beltran has seen the weirdest things in his at bats. He had the bat in his hands when Kolten Wong was picked off of first base to end Game 4 of the 2013 World Series. He had taken ball from Anthony Ranaudo when Christian Vazquez popped up to catch Brett Gardner stuck between first and second. Your browser does not support iframes. Gardner tried to draw out the rundown so that Derek Jeter could presumably steal home (as if this were possible these days). Jemile Weeks saw that Jeter strayed too far from third base and pivoted away from the Gardner imbroglio to get the ball to Brock Holt, who tagged Jeter. The split second Holt secured third and he turned his attention back to Gardner. Gardner’s speed couldn’t save him from Allen Craig’s tag. To me the “2” the Yankees are wearing to honor Jeter isn’t for the retiring shortstop but for that amazing, improbable double play. It also is representative of the intelligence quotient of someone who continues to allow Jeter to bat in the two-hole. Despite being a rookie Vazquez has a commanding presence behind the plate. He handles his fellow rookies well and isn’t shy...

Team Building

If Yoenis Cespedes will be playing left field longterm someone needs to sit down with him and show him where Manny Ramirez and Jonny Gomes positioned themselves. Ramirez might have played a bit too shallow; Cespedes could probably cheat closer to the wall with his superior fielding speed. But if he sets up in right field, which would showcase his cannon arm, he’d need a workshop with Shane Victorino. Victorino would have to figure out if he would undergo season-ending back surgery, however, before rejoining the team. Cespedes lined a single to left field in his first at bat as a Red Sox player. In the fifth inning he came up with one down, two men on base, and the score 5-3 in the Yankees’ favor. A home run would have put his new team ahead but Cespedes flied out to Jacoby Ellsbury. Joe Kelly found out about being sent to Boston along with Allen Craig for John Lackey via Twitter. Kelly had been chatting with A.J. Pierzynski about it; I guess the catcher isn’t ignoring his teammates and looking at his phone in the clubhouse now that he’s on a contending team. Speaking of Pierzynski, this game lasted four...

Onward Christian Catcher

Rookie catcher Christian Vazquez clouted two doubles, just eight fewer than A.J. Pierzynski did this season. He drove in three runs and scored twice. He did so well that he found himself receiving Edward Mujica in the ninth inning, something that only happens when Boston has a big league or John Farrell has exhausted any other options. Your browser does not support iframes. The freckle-faced youth listed his home country Puerto Rico as his favorite place to have a vacation. (Everyone say, “Awww…!”) He hails from Bayamon, which is where Yadier and Jose Molina were born (eldest brother Bengie was born in Rio Piedras). Catching excellence isn’t transmitted by proximity, but if Vazquez continues on the trajectory he set for himself in this game he will be a solid contributor. Perhaps the Red Sox have produced a long-term backstop, one of the more elusive positions to cultivate. Brock Holt’s family was louder than the Astros crowd. It is clever how they don’t mention how they had found the infant Holt in an alien rocket. The Holts had a lot to cheer for as the leadoff hitter went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a run batted in, and a base on...

Love for Sale

Who’s prepared to pay the price for a trip to paradise? Grass- and blood-stained Jonny Gomes is. The green smears are from his diving grab of Alexei Ramirez’s sinking line drive in the fourth inning. In the seventh Gomes was hit in the face by Tyler Flowers’s fly ball but still recovered in time to get Alejandro De Aza out at home. Love that’s only slightly soiled, love for sale. It is not coincidence that A.J. PIerzynski’s departure has altered the attitude in the clubhouse. Rob Bradford’s report stated that players went to management about Pierzynski’s lack of engagement with his pitchers. Pierzynski’s approach at the plate was in opposition to the Red Sox philosophy of seeing as many pitches as possible. His impatience at the plate, deteriorated offensive production, and lack of camaraderie are not missed. Being a catcher requires levels of sacrifice. You submit your body to countless hours crouching, ricochets, and, prior to the rule change, collisions. You spend time with your battery mates learning their strengths and the opposition’s weaknesses. Pierzynski wasn’t up for that commitment any longer. Old love, new love, every love but true love. Pierzynski’s replacement Christian Vazquez went 0-for-3 in his major...

Say Hey A.J. Oops I Mean D.F.A.

Many sources including Ken Rosenthal are tweeting that A.J. Pierzynski was designated for assignment. Catching prospect Christian Vazquez will be called up from Pawtucket to replace him. Everyone’s excited to see what this 23-year old has rather than watch Pierzynski pop out on the first pitch or get thrown out at second base trying to stretch a single into a double. There was always the chance Pierzynski would get into a brawl, however, and that would have added some excitement to this season. Let the youth movement begin!...
