Nine-Run Ruin

I don’t think these Blue Jays fans are still upset that John Farrell abandoned them. As the horror in the seventh inning unfurled Farrell tried to bring in pitchers to preserve Joe Kelly’s 8-4 lead. Matt Barnes, Junichi Tazawa, and Tommy Layne all failed; they saw the entire Toronto lineup and all nine batters scored to give the visitors a 13-8 advantage. Perhaps Justin Smoak’s two-run homer snapped Layne out of his stupor as he managed to get three outs to mercifully end the inning. The Boston Globe’s Eric Wilbur suggested that Farrell is at fault for the team’s poor performance. “Turns out the Red Sox aren’t only missing clutch hitting in their clubhouse,” opined Wilbur. “They’re clearly also lacking any semblance of backbone from their manager. The manager needs to go. That’s now more clear than ever.” Michael Silverman from the Boston Herald fired back with his own thoughts. Farrell not responding in kind to Wade Miley’s outburst was not an example of a lack of spine but presence of mind, according to Silverman. “That Farrell did not escalate the Miley episode by returning the pitcher’s fire-and-brimstone act with equal ferocity in the sight of the TV cameras is...

Layne Change

Clay Buchholz threw for eight near-brilliant innings; the only blemish on his line was a home run surrendered to Seth Smith in the sixth. He struck out 11 batters, walked none, and allowed just three hits. Tommy Layne was to hold the line in the ninth and did fairly well: he notched two outs but gave up a single to Brad Miller. John Farrell pulled Layne in favor of Junichi Tazawa to face Nelson Cruz. Cruz worked the count full then laced the ball into deep left. The Mariners celebrated the victory like they won the pennant. The phrase “act like you’ve been there before comes to mind,” but since this is Seattle it’s more “Gatorade showers are so cliché, we hoist people over our shoulders and do water baths now.” Note to the Mariners marketing crew: fedoras are so eight years ago. You need to update to porkpie or newsboy cap nights. Excellent call on Negro Leagues Night planned for Saturday night, however. Law and Disorder

It’s a good thing Steve Horgan was on hand last night to celebrate his bobblehead because there were a few egregious plays on the field. Junichi Tazawa had a rough eighth inning. He walked Chris Iannetta to start the frame and then Kole Calhoun doubled. Tazawa gathered himself to strike out Mike Trout in three pitches. John Farrell called for an intentional walk of Albert Pujols to enable the force at every base. Howie Kendrick obligingly knocked the ball to Tazawa but the pitcher booted it. The reliever hurriedly tossed to Christian Vazquez in an attempt to get Iannetta out but his throw went awry. Calhoun also scored on the misplays. On the bright side for Tazawa, the two errors meant that the runs didn’t go toward his earned run average. The Red Sox lost the game but Farrell won a challenge later in the eighth. Erick Aybar grounded to Dustin Pedroia who fired home. Vazquez tagged out Pujols easily but Mike Muchlinski missed the call. Game 124: August 18, 2014 Los Angeles Angels73-50 4 W: C.J. Give Up the Ghost

Junichi Tazawa surrendered the lead in the seventh inning of last night’s game and Ben Cherington waved the white flag today. Jake Peavy was sent to the San Francisco Giants for a pair of pitching prospects: right-handed Heath Hembree and southpaw Edwin Escobar. Hembree is ranked as the Giants’ seventh best prospect by Baseball America and Escobar is second on the list. Escobar struggled in the Pacific Coast League, a circuit notorious for inflating hitters’ capabilities and destroying pitchers’ psyches. Escobar is from Venezuela and related to major leaguers Kelvim and Alcides. It was in San Francisco that Peavy bought a tobacco store Indian statue last year. “The Chief” was a good luck charm for the rest of the season and got a ride in the duck boat that Peavy purchased after the World Series parade. Perhaps “Charlie River” will be re-christened as “McCovey’s Duckie.” When Peavy was traded to the Red Sox from the White Sox at the trade deadline last year he was immediately embraced by his teammates and fans. He was amazed to have his name be in the same list of the legends who played at Fenway. We know that wins are not the best indicator...

Live Deep and Suck Out All the Marrow of Life

The Red Sox fell behind early in the game with Clay Buchholz expending 26 pitches, giving up three runs, and muddling through seven Blue Jays hitters. On the other side of the ball Brandon Morrow wasn’t sharp himself. He walked two batters in both the first and second innings but escaped by virtue of double plays. The tide turned somewhat in the second inning. John Farrell challenged Marty Foster’s call that Jose Reyes was safe at first and after review the ruling was overturned. Farrell improved his challenge record to two out of six won. John Gibbons pulled Brandon Morrow out of the game in the third inning with two out even though he had a no-hitter in the works. None of his teammates wanted to disrupt Morrow’s mojo. Or perhaps it was because in the 2⅔ innings Morrow had walked eight batters. He allowed four consecutive bases on balls in the third that loaded the bases and then forced in the visitors’ first run of the game. Morrow was replaced by Chad Jenkins. Jenkins’s second pitch ended up in the Rogers Center’s left field seats thanks to A.J. Pierzynski’s grand slam home run. The Red Sox assumed a 5-3...

Falling for Sizemore

David Ross said it best: “[Sizemore’s] been a big pickup for us,… and he’s easy on the eyes.” Some baseball girls’ hearts are swayed by twinkling eyes, a charming smile, and boyish good looks, but for Red Sox ladies the three-run, go-ahead home run is the bare minimum. Sizemore came through in the sixth inning with one out and two on. Adding to the allure was securing the win against a despised divisional rival. He almost made the alternate blue uniforms bearable. Sizemore’s presence has made most fans forget Jacoby Ellsbury. This young man harbors some lingering resentment, however. Get used to it, kid. Scott Boras represents not only Ellsbury but Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Xander Bogaerts. Jon Lester turned in his third straight quality start and finally tallied his first win. Junichi Tazawa took over in the seventh when Lester got into a jam, allowing Kelly Johnson to single in Ichiro Suzuki. With Brian Roberts at third, two out, and a reinvigorated Yankee Stadium crowd clamoring for their captain, Tazawa toed the rubber against Derek Jeter. Tazawa had been in tougher spots, like in the ALCS against Miguel Cabrera. Jeter flied out harmlessly to right field. The Red Sox...

Light ’Em Up Up Up

Although John Lackey was visibly annoyed that a 17-minute power outage prevented him from taking the mound for the bottom of the second that frustration channeled itself into spectacular pitching. In the first inning Lackey gave up two singles but for his remaining 5⅔ innings he only surrendered a double to Jhonny Peralta in the sixth and a single to Victor Martinez in the seventh. Lackey outdueled Justin Verlander, of all pitchers. If there were a proposition bet on such an occurrence someone would be a billionaire. Verlander didn’t permit a hit until fifth inning when Jonny Gomes tapped a two-out single to Peralta. In the sixth Jacoby Ellsbury also managed a single off the Tigers’ ace but didn’t advance past second. Mike Napoli dispensed with single-base bleeders and bloops and bopped a one-out home to left field with the count full. It was the only run in a tense contest. Your browser does not support iframes. Craig Breslow was summoned in the bottom of the seventh to take care of the final out with Martinez, a runner he inherited from Lackey, on first. Alex Avila took a called strike but Breslow failed to get the next four pitches in...

Flipping the Bird

The Red Sox relief corps didn’t cut the mustard late in the game. Junichi Tazawa successfully navigated the seventh frame but couldn’t get Matt Wieters and Danny Valencia out in the eighth. Franklin Morales struck out Nick Markakis but surrendered the go-ahead double to Steve Pearce. Even though the Red Sox clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs with the Seattle’s defeat of Oakland they had battled back to take the lead in the seventh. Both Jonny Gomes and Daniel Nava had RBI singles. Neither one of these players were thought to be key in the remaking of this team but in a season of low expectations role players like Gomes and Nava have made the difference between adequacy and excellence. This Gomes lookalike had his helmet signed. This season has been so redolent of 2004. Derek Lowe, Pedro Martinez, and Mike Timlin have been color analysts and Tim Wakefield joined Tom Caron at the NESN studios. Another member of that fabled team is part of the Dodgers organization. The Improbable Dream

Jake Peavy had a mishap pursuing Brett Gardner’s bunted ball in the third. He probably should have let Ryan Lavarnway try to field it, but Peavy is the kind of player that wants to contribute as much as possible. Because of this spirit John Farrell tends to leave Peavy in situations that usually would have him gesturing to the bullpen. Farrell stuck with Peavy in the seventh and didn’t call on a reliever until the starter had allowed the first two batters he faced to reach base. Perhaps Farrell was trying to rest his taxed bullpen. Junichi Tazawa had done so well in his set-up role and there were so many injuries that he was one of Farrell’s favorites. But last night he and Matt Thornton allowed all their inherited runners to score. Peavy was erased from the decision when the Yankees took the lead, 8-7. It was a comeback so detestable that even replaying Alex Rodriguez’s stumble on his fourth-inning double didn’t inspire a smile. Unlike Tazawa, David Robertson pitched a perfect frame in the eighth. Mariano Rivera was one out away from adding another treasured memory to Mariano Rivera’s retirement tour scrapbook in the ninth. He dispatched David...

Workman’s Comp

Felix Doubront left the with just 3⅔ innings under his belt. The southpaw pitched well until the fourth where he got into trouble with the middle of the White Sox order; Alexei Ramirez and Paul Konerko singled and Avisail Garcia walked to load the bases. When Chicago scored four runs and the nine-hole hitter Tyler Flowers singled John Farrell finally pulled the starter. Brandon Workman took over and earned a win with just 1⅓ innings toeing the rubber. Farrell mixed the order of his relievers with Junichi Tazawa taking over for Franklin Morales with a runner on and one out in the seventh. Craig Breslow pitched in the eighth and surrendered a solo home run to Flowers. Dustin Pedroia’s togs provided visual reinforcement of his team’s name. He went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk, so perhaps the second baseman will go with his new look to support his superstitions. As part of September roster expansion the Red Sox added Quintin Berry, Rubby De La Rosa, Ryan Lavarnway, and Brandon Snyder. To make room on the roster Daniel Bard was designated for assignment. It is amazing to see the formerly heralded reliever fall so far from the ranks...

Missing in Action

Ow ard is it to ead ithout he irst onsonant? Et’s ask Swaldo Arcia, he ero of he ame or he Wins. And win the Twins did with Arcia’s two-run homer in the sixth, his run off Aaron Hicks’s double in the fifth, and a pair of scores by Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer. I would have thought the Red Sox would do no worse than a series split against the Twins but end up winning only one game in the series. They lost their closer in the rout as well. There are eight words no pitcher ever wants to hear: “Dr. Andrews is ready to see you now.” Joel Hanrahan was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow. To his credit Hanrahan is going to try to rehab the injury instead of getting Tommy John surgery right away, but even that course of action well keep him off the mound for two months. Branded

Before I talk about beef and baseball I just wanted to send my thoughts and prayers to my friend, the Advanced Scout at Fire Brand of the American League, whose mother who is in the hospital. Like the Red Sox recent troubles against Texas this is just a temporary setback. Aside from being the president and an owner of the Texas Rangers Nolan Ryan also has his own brand of all-natural beef. I suppose this herd of mascots is promoting what’s for dinner. Alexi Ogando wasn’t serving up meatballs. Boston hitters managed a meager six hits off of the fireballer. Only David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia powered extra base hits. Ortiz’s second-inning double resulted in the his team’s sole run. Am I the only one who winces along with Ortiz whenever he runs the basepaths? Here is a rather large hot dog that in Texas terms is a kid’s meal. The radioactive green Chicago relish developed sentience and made its way to Arlington. Boston fans were out in force but witnessed another loss against the Rangers. Stay strong! Derek Holland wears this mask for altitude training. I would check his phone records to see if he is calling physicists to...

Game 127: August 27, 2009 White Sox9W: John Danks (12-8)64-64, 1 game winning streak Red Sox5L: Junichi Tazawa (2-3)73-54, 1 game losing streak Highlights: Tazawa showed the absent-minded side of the tanuki by forgetting how to pitch effectively. It was a typical greenhorn sequence of pitching starts, on one week and off the next. In between innings Tazawa was shown in the dugout with a rather elaborate shoulder gadget; if anything it just concentrated suckage around his arm. The infield didn’t do Junichi Tazawa any favors. In the third, Jayson Nix, who has replaced Frank Catalanotto as the Inconsequential Player Who Does Inexplicably Well Against the Red Sox, sprayed a line drive to left. Mike Lowell cut off the ball to initiate the rundown of Nix between first and second. Kevin Youkilis threw a smidgen high to Dustin Pedroia (insert short joke here). Pedroia dropped the ball, chased it down, but had no play at first because neither Tazawa nor Victor Martinez covered the sack. Alexei Ramirez crossed the plate unhindered for the eighth run of the game. With the Red Sox starter unable to go more than four innings and many bullpen arms unavailable, Nick Green was called on to...

Game 122: August 22, 2009 Yankees1L: A.J. Burnett (10-7)77-46, 1 game losing streak Red Sox14W: Junichi Tazawa (2-2)70-52, 1 game winning streak Highlights: Happy 70th birthday, Carl Yastrzemski; yesterday’s rout was quite the way to celebrate. I can’t help but wonder, though: if Terry Francona had not surrendered Friday’s game in the sixth inning could they have made a comeback? Yesterday the Red Sox stormed back from the shellacking they took in the series opener. Kevin Youkilis went 3-for-5 with two homers. David Ortiz lofted his 20th quadrangular in the fifth, prompting A.J. Burnett to launch into a Hamlet-like soliloquy: “Why, why, why, why would you do that, why?” Allowing Ortiz to smash an opposite-field four-bagger must have been discouraging, but Burnett should have known he was in for a rough outing when Alex Gonzalez went deep in second.Brad Penny has had exactly two outings in which he pitched as well as Junichi Tazawa did yesterday, which are two more than I thought he would have. The Yankees were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, including four fruitless at bats with runners at third base. In the sixth he had runners on the corners with one out. Both Robinson Cano...

Game 112: August 11, 2009 Tigers5L: Chris Lambert (0-1)59-53, 2 game losing streak Red Sox7W: Junichi Tazawa (1-1)H: Fernando Cabrera (1)H: Takashi Saito (2)64-48, 2 game winning streak Highlights: Tazawa made his Fenway debut and after a rough first inning settled into a solid five-inning outing with 1 earned run, 2 base on balls, and 6 strike outs. Despite his skillful start Tazawa wasn’t the headlining act of last night’s show. When Miguel Cabrera got hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out I thought the damage would have been worse if the Tigers first baseman got the chance to swing the bat. Then Nick Green failed to turn the double play on Carlos Guillen’s grounder with the ducks on the pond. A high throw pulled Dustin Pedroia off the second base bag and allowed Placido Polanco to cross the plate. The inning continued with Magglio Ordonez driving in a run on a fielder’s choice, a walk by Alex Avila, and Cabrera scoring on Brandon Inge’s liner to left.Hit by pitch or three-run home run, by the middle of the inning the results were the same. After Pedroia grounded into a double play in the bottom of the second...

Game 108: August 7, 2009 ∙ 15 innings Red Sox0L: Junichi Tazawa (0-1)62-46, 4 game losing streak Yankees2W: Phil Coke (3-3)67-42, 5 game winning streak Highlights: The first character of the name Junichi [純一] means pure, innocent, and simple and the second symbolizes one. His family name is Tazawa [田澤], the first kanji means rice paddy and the second ideogram denotes swamp, which demonstrates that the grain is central to Japanese cuisine and culture and that rice needs swampy conditions to grow. Tazawa made his major league debut on Friday night after having made the jump from Portland to Pawtucket at the end of July. He was going to pitch at Saturday’s Futures at Fenway doubleheader, but the major league club was in dire circumstances with the trade of Justin Masterson. Four words, four hits. That’s all I wanted to write about this game, but as Josh Beckett deserved more (any) offensive run support, this game merits better treatment.A pure baseball fan would marvel at this 15-inning classic.A.J. Burnett rebounded from his Chicago shellacking with 7⅔ innings of shutout ball. The Yankees hurler walked six batters, struck out six (although Jacoby Ellsbury reached on catcher’s interference), and allowed one hit. Josh...
