Juan Gone

It was a game of firsts and lasts. Blake Swihart got his first run batted in as a major league player in the third inning. He sent a humpback double into center field to plate Xander Bogaerts, who also doubled. Swihart also tallied his first run, crossing home plate on Dustin Pedroia’s sacrifice fly to center. Edward Mujica made his last appearance in a Red Sox uniform. He relieved Justin Masterson in the fifth inning after the starter surrendered two consecutive walks bookended by two singles. Mujica got out of the inning cleanly and escaped damage in the sixth. Rene Rivera led off with a double but was moved over by Kevin Kiermaier’s bunt. Kiermaier was ruled safe at first but John Farrell won the challenge. Mujica then fielded Logan Forsythe’s comebacker and nailed Rivera at home. Mujica fought valiantly, Mujica fought nobly. And Mujica was DFAed. Juan Nieves was fired yesterday. No replacement has been announced as of yet. With the release of the Wells Report there’s likely to be a few openings in the Patriots clubhouse for guys who know their way around balls. Nieves is a scapegoat for the underperforming, overwhelmingly mediocre pitching staff, Farrell indicated that...

Avoidance

The Red Sox almost averted a loss yesterday but succumbed when Tommy Layne and Edward Mujica each surrendered a run in the last two innings. At least Boston doubled their scoring in this game compared to the first two contests. The fans in the stands improved from the prior games, too. This kid’s quick-acting father stopped his child from interfering with the ball in play. Your browser does not support iframes. In the first inning Will Middlebrooks singled to right field with the bases loaded and two out. Yoenis Cespedes scored and Allen Craig appeared safe at third base but was called out by Angel Hernandez. Replay showed that Craig got his foot in safely. Middlebrooks and Craig teamed up for another controversial play at third, but this one wasn’t as intriguing as the obstruction call in the World Series. How hard is it for a guy to avoid a pie to face from a person in a mascot costume with low visibility? If that guy’s name is Gary Striewski’s, it’s pretty difficult. Wally smashing a pie into Striewski’s face sums up the Red Sox performance in the past two series against AL West teams. The Angels swept Boston...

Red Hot

Going into this game the Red Sox were 23-23 in one-run games. They sprung to an early lead with Brock Holt reaching on a walk, a wild pitch, and scoring on Daniel Nava’s single to center field. Billy Hamilton thought that his arm was as good as his legs and tried to hose Holt at the plate. His throw missed the cutoff man and wasn’t near home plate, either. Nava advanced to second and reached third on Yoenis Cespedes’s ground out to short. Mike Napoli tapped the ball to Todd Frazier, who had to get around Zack Cozart before throwing home. Nava beat the relay and Napoli was safe at first. Following Xander Boagerts’s return to batting competence Jackie Bradley, Jr. finally broke his 0-for-35 streak in the second inning. He and Bogaerts singled but were stranded by Dan Butler, Anthony Ranaudo, and Holt. Ranaudo has had two victories in two games started. In stark contrast Jake Peavy has two wins in 23 starts. Ranaudo may not be so lucky the next time he gives up home runs to a light-hitting middle infielder like Cozart and an opposing pitcher such as Leake in the same inning to surrender the lead....

Time for a Correia Change

Ron Gardenhire may find himself Gardenfired if he keeps on telling his pitchers to pitch to David Ortiz. The designated hitter had another two-home run evening, putting him in sole possession of third place in career home runs in a Red Sox uniform. He is 68 home runs behind Carl Yazstremski and 137 fewer than Ted Williams. I wonder where his statue will be placed? Your browser does not support iframes. Kevin Correia was pummeled by the Red Sox lineup for five runs over four innings. The relief corps surrendered another four runs. Michael Tonkin in particular had a rough time in the ninth. With the bases loaded and two down A.J. Pierzynski laced the ball the left field line and drove in two runs. Your browser does not support iframes. It was nice to have those two additional runs with Edward Mujica finishing off the frame. Mujica allowed Trevor Plouffe to homer into the left-center seats. But the five-run lead proved to great to overcome. The Bruins also couldn’t overcome the Canadiens’ early lead. They fell short 3-1 in the series finale. They just didn’t have the Game 7 magic that powered them through their 2011 playoff run. Game...

Falling for Sizemore

David Ross said it best: “[Sizemore’s] been a big pickup for us,… and he’s easy on the eyes.” Some baseball girls’ hearts are swayed by twinkling eyes, a charming smile, and boyish good looks, but for Red Sox ladies the three-run, go-ahead home run is the bare minimum. Sizemore came through in the sixth inning with one out and two on. Adding to the allure was securing the win against a despised divisional rival. He almost made the alternate blue uniforms bearable. Sizemore’s presence has made most fans forget Jacoby Ellsbury. This young man harbors some lingering resentment, however. Get used to it, kid. Scott Boras represents not only Ellsbury but Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Xander Bogaerts. Jon Lester turned in his third straight quality start and finally tallied his first win. Junichi Tazawa took over in the seventh when Lester got into a jam, allowing Kelly Johnson to single in Ichiro Suzuki. With Brian Roberts at third, two out, and a reinvigorated Yankee Stadium crowd clamoring for their captain, Tazawa toed the rubber against Derek Jeter. Tazawa had been in tougher spots, like in the ALCS against Miguel Cabrera. Jeter flied out harmlessly to right field. The Red Sox...

Big Bang Series

The exhilaration of yesterday’s triumphant trip to the White House carried over into tonight’s game. David Ortiz has 40,000 retweets of his selfie with the President of the United States, surpassing the Instagram “likes” of Bill Nye and and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s snapshot with the leader of the free world. Ortiz was 0-for-7 against Ubaldo Jimenez until the third frame. What an honor! Thanks for the #selfie, @BarackObama pic.twitter.com/y5Ww74sEID— David Ortiz (@davidortiz) April 1, 2014 Ortiz clubbed his first home run of the season with Dustin Pedroia on base to give his team a 2-0 lead. Baltimore battled back with none other than Nelson Cruz, who homered in his second consecutive game. This time his four-bagger cleared the right field wall in the fourth inning with Chris Davis on base to tie the game 2-2. Mike Napoli was singled out by President Obama as the only athlete on his Council of Beards. That prestigious appointment proved motivating. Napoli untangled the tied game in the fifth inning with a blast to dead center, driving in Daniel Nava. Napoli tacked on two more runs in the seventh. Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco were the Bash Brothers. I propose that Ortiz and Napoli...
