Just Not In Time

Justin Masterson had a dreadful outing. In the two and one-third innings he pitched he gave up six hits, two of them homers. All told he surrendered six earned runs as he walked one and struck out one. The day after this performance he found himself on the disabled list with arm fatigue. “I’m not real happy, but I don’t have to be,” said the beleaguered starter. No one is really happy when you have a pitcher who pressures his offense into having to produce. Maybe that is what Dustin Pedroia was thinking when he tried and failed to stretch his first-inning single into a double. Masterson was throwing batting practice speed to opponents and consistently forced his teammates to play from behind. With Masterson on the disabled list Steven Wright could be tapped to fill the hole in the rotation, but his five and two-thirds innings did not make a convincing case. Wright gave up six hits, three earned runs, and three walks while striking out four. Even the laws of physics seemed to favor the Athletics last night. When Sam Fuld nubbed the ball towards Pedroia with Brett Lawrie on the run from first it narrowly missed the...

Gomes Sweet Gomes

The Fenway crowd saw a few things up close and personal that they might not have been expecting. They saw the Red Sox batters knock in timely hits in the fourth inning, sparking a two-run rally on a trio of doubles by Brock Holt, Jackie Bradley, Jr., and Dustin Pedroia. Jonny Gomes followed up with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The umpiring crew couldn’t believe a Boston player had a hit with a man on base so they reviewed it. Indeed Gomes had homered to the ledge on the Green Monster. Gomes was amongst the veteran players who wanted Stephen Drew back on the Red Sox. “When you get in the playoffs, you create a special bond as players. It becomes like a brotherhood,” said Gomes. “Then you win the World Series and you share so much. It’s not really like getting this All-Star-caliber shortstop back. It’s just kind of like one of our brothers is back, which is pretty cool.” Xander Bogaerts and Will Middlebrooks are part of that brotherhood but the younger siblings just weren’t contributing as expected. Drew will shore up the left side of the diamond and perhaps ease the pressure off Bogaerts. Or...

Caption Contest

The Red Sox failed to sweep the Blue Jays because they were unable to decipher R.A. Dickey’s cryptic knuckleball. Jon Lester recovered from his shellacking by the Yankees but could not out-duel Dickey. So instead of discussing a rather disappointing game, let’s play Caption Contest! In the fourth inning Jackie Bradley, Jr. made an impressive snare of Edwin Encarnacion’s line drive. After the catch Bradley had a moment with the ball. A. Do not come wiz me to ze Casbah - we shall make beautiful musicks togezzer right here! B. Jack, I want you to draw me like one of your French girls. C. The Jockey fashion statement is bold. D. Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio, a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy. Brett Lawrie doubled in the seventh to plate Encarnacion. A. If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands! B. I give myself high fives because no one else will. C. I live for the applause, applause, applause / I live for the applause-plause / Live for the applause-plause / Live for the way that you cheer and scream for me / The applause, applause, applause D. Girls say I give them...

Phobias

Fear the beards. Fear the beers. Fear the ears. Fear calls made unawares. Fear the sneers. Fear he who errs. On a side note, this couldn’t be called a double for Xander Bogaerts? Do officials scorers also get in on rookie hazing? Is Brett Lawrie so loathsome that placing an error on his stats sheet would be just desserts? Perhaps the answer to that last question is “yes.” Lawrie used Twitter to call out his former high school coach and relatives of his high school classmate because he didn’t as much playing time on the basketball team as said classmate. Game 156: September 21, 2013 Toronto Blue Jays71-83 4 W: Mark Buehrle (12-9)H: Dustin McGowan (6), Sergio Santos (8)S: Casey Janssen (33) 2B: Adam Lind (26) Boston Red Sox94-62 2 L: Clay Buchholz (11-1) No extra base hits...

Lester Hands Toronto Its Lunch

Not only did Jon Lester bully the Toronto Blue Jays for their lunch money, he turned around and used that money to advertise his hot dogs in Rogers Centre. Thanks to Lester’s dazzling seven innings of shutout ball no Blue Jays hotdogged it around the basepaths last night. Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie would have to wait another day to stick his tongue out while rounding the bases as if he were Michael Jordan dunking on Alonzo Mourning. Someone needs to take the rookie aside and remind him that greenhorns don’t have signature moves. And if, not when, he earns the right to one, pick something better than a facial expression that goes along with “nanny nanny boo boo.” The Red Sox scored in every inning but the sixth, seventh, and ninth. While Marco Scutaro’s trio of doubles were delightful and Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s and Josh Reddick’s circuit clouts were riveting, I most enjoyed Kevin Youkilis’s leadoff single in the fourth. The Red Sox third baseman sharply rapped the ball to his counterpart. The ball took an unanticipated hop on the Astroturf that had Lawrie swiveling his head around like a weather vane in a windstorm. Were I Youkilis I’d...

Please Don’t Be Long

Well it only goes to showAnd I told them where to goAsk a policeman on the streetThere’s so many there to meetPlease don’t be long, please don’t you be very longPlease don’t be long or I may be asleep“Blue Jay Way” — The Beatles Pitchers’ duels are like a dining experience at a Michelin four-star restaurant where they don’t monitor ingredients that patrons have severe allergic reactions to. Most people can revel in the glory of skilled professionals plying their trade, but a number of the participants may find themselves writhing in potentially lethal agony due to anaphylactic shock. Such was the case for Red Sox fans who through nearly four hours of baseball on their Labor Day holiday only to have their hope for victory fly away with Brett Lawrie’s two-out home run in the bottom of the 11th inning. The emerging third baseman has all the makings of a Red Sox killer: dazzling, rally-killing defensive plays, smart, aggressive baserunning, and a knack for a timely hit. Marco Scutaro played like an embedded Blue Jay. In the fifth the shortstop doubled to center field with one down. He tripped while trying to advance to third on Jacoby Ellsbury’s tapper...
