Magic Carp

Anyone who plays Pokemon will get this title. You know, Magikarp? The useless fish that turns into powerful dragon called Gyarados at level 20? Sorry, “Carp Diem” was taken. Much like that flailing piscine Pokemon the Red Sox were powerless against Jose Quintana. The 25-year old Colombian starter carried a perfect game into the sixth frame. Stephen Drew led off the inning with a seven-pitch base on balls. David Ross followed with a walk of his own. Ross now has 9 walks on the season in 114 plate appearances, the same number as A.J. Pierzynski had. Pierzynski enjoyed 274 plate appearances. Just saying. Jackie Bradley, Jr. broke up the no-hitter and tied the game with a ground ball single to right. Perhaps his defensive success is giving him more confidence at the dish. Brock Holt’s magic touch from the previous game’s walk-off win didn’t carry into this game. He and Dustin Pedroia grounded out without advancing the runners. One of David Ortiz’s many blasts to deep center finally landed some place other in a White Sox outfielder’s glove. His shot clanged off the wall, plating Ross and Bradley and gaining a two-run advantage for the local nine. All-Star Koji Uehara,...

Sloppy Throes

The Red Sox committed five errors in last night’s debacle against the Yankees. It was the most Red Sox gaffes in a game since April 28, 2001 versus the Royals. Shane Victorino returned with a slightly shorter snippet of “Three Little Birds.” He only went 1-for-5 but he didn’t have any errors in right field. The Gold Glover looked much more comfortable in right field than Grady Sizemore did. One game too late the MLB clarified the transfer rule. Just as it was since the 1800s an out occurs whenever a player has complete control over the ball in his glove, and even if he drops the ball after opening his glove it is still an out. No longer is it a requirement to successfully remove the ball from the glove for it to be an out. So Dustin Pedroia and the Red Sox would have had an out on this play in the second inning. The Yankees scored three runs in the frame. In “other than that Mrs. Lincoln” news, David Ortiz started his 1,644th game as designated hitter, which is an MLB record. Ortiz went 0-for-1 but had a sacrifice fly in the third inning. John Farrell tapped...

Boston Stronger

On the eve of Patriots’ Day the Red Sox held a ceremony for the Boston Marathon. Families of the victims, survivors, and first responders gathered while a bagpipe orchestra played. Canvases from 50 states paying tribute to the marathon ringed the field. By the afternoon one Boston team was celebrating. The Bruins won the second game of the first round of the playoffs against Detroit 4-1. Justin Florek, Reilly Smith, Milan Lucic, and Zdeno Chara scored goals while Jarome Iginla and Torey Krug had two assists each. In a reversal of David against Goliath, Brendan Smith tried to start a fight with Chara at the end of the first period. Referees intervened, not wanting to see more red on the Detroit player’s uniform. If the Red Sox were to be victorious they would have to overcome an early deficit. Jake Peavy was roughed up in the first inning to the tune of a Nelson Cruz home run, a free pass to Chris Davis, consecutive singles to Adam Jones and Matt Wieters, and a sac fly for J.J. Hardy. Baltimore scored runs in the fifth and sixth. Jones’s line drive RBI single to Jonny Gomes in left field knocked Peavy out...

Carp Diem

In Japanese culture, koi symbolize perseverance because they bravely swim up waterfalls to transform into dragons. Thus Mike Carp’s surname is fitting as the former Met has endured despite being relegated as a role player rather than a regular. David Ortiz paid him the ultimate compliment by comparing Carp to himself. Carp became the first Red Sox player to belt a pinch-hit grand slam since Kevin Millar on June 7, 2003. The tenth-inning clout gave the Red Sox a 7-3 lead and prompted multiple beard pulls. Jarrod Saltalamacchia was at the top of the dugout steps to tug at Carp’s whiskers. Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia waited until Carp thought he was safe and then went for the double yank. Ryan Dempster had a win in his grasp until Brandon Workman gave up a game-tying home run in the eighth. Dempster hopefully won’t lose hair or sleep over the erasure of the win. Jonny Gomes and Mike Napoli shave their pates but sport full beards; perhaps Dempster should join their hair club. Koji Uehara notched the win instead and added his name to the Red Sox record books. He surpassed Ellis Kinder’s 1952 record of 32 consecutive batters retired. Uehara will...

Hugs Not Drugs

In the nine-hole row make sure you updated the hitter from Xander Bogaerts to Mike Carp. Make sure you write “PH” for pinch hit. He singled over Manny Machado, so put down “1B” in the lower left. Now in Salty’s box fill the line from second to home and put a dot for a run. Put Carp’s number there, 37, to show who drove him in. That Carp’s floater somehow eluded Machado’s glove was remarkable. The Orioles third baseman is threatening to topple Evan Longoria as the AL East’s premiere player at the hot corner. Machado smacked his 12th homer of the season in the third. It should have been a two-run shot but Brian Roberts was caught stealing third base (make a perpendicular line on the basepath between second and third and put “13” to show he was nailed during Machado’s at bat). In Uehara’s row it’s 1 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 earned runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout, and 24 hugs. Hmm, maybe fewer hugs and more high fives, I’ll have to review the video. Not So Home Free

The Red Sox ran themselves out of this game. In the first inning Daniel Nava was thrown out at home by Vernon Wells on David Ortiz’s opposite field single. In the bottom of the fifth Mike Carp aggressively tried to score from third on a wild pitch to Jose Iglesias. He did score in the seventh on such a play, however. After he made the splits at the keystone sack to double in that frame there was no way he wasn’t going to convert the hit into a run. At the San Diego Comic-Con zombies were all the rage and the trend as permeated the nation. On the East Coast the Yankees represent reanimated cadavers well with Wells, Lyle Overbay, Ichiro Suzuki, and Travis Hafner. There were zombified fans in the first row behind home plate. Only one fan attempted to distract Chris Stewart from Dustin Pedroia’s foul ball; the others were transfixed with attempting to catch the ball themselves. Stewart made the catch and doubled over the wall but still had time to compose himself and throw out Nava at second base for an improbable double play. I didn’t include Mariano Rivera on the Yankee zombie list because he...

Two Triumphs

Jonny Gomes is not an outstanding outfielder by any means but he goes all out on every play. He’ll make friends with the fences, splay his body on the sod, and commune with the cutoff man. In the third he gathered Nick Swisher’s single and fired to David Ross to cut down Asdrubal Cabrera at home. Despite the superlative defensive play the Red Sox went into the eighth inning down a run. With one man out Pedro Ciriaco sent a double to center field. Jacoby Ellsbury struck out, so with two outs Mike Carp pinch hit for Gomes to leverage Carp’s left-handedness. Carp promptly doubled off the wall to tie the game. Not to be outdone, Dustin Pedroia doubled higher off the wall to give his team the lead. David Ortiz was intentionally walked and Mike Napoli unintentionally walked to load the bases. The reliever Vinnie Pestano was rattled and the defense behind him unraveled. Daniel Nava popped up in what should have been a fairly routine out to shortstop but the ball dropped between Cabrera and Michael Brantley. Two runs scored on the misplay. The Wally hat has reached epidemic proportions. For variety, at least throw in a Bruins...

Re-Encarnacion

Unassuming Mike Carp clouted his first home run of the season in the fourth. Unfortunately he didn’t recreate his little league performance of a three-homer game. Edwin Encarnacion nearly did, however, and both his home runs came with a man on base. Encarnacion’s runs also were in response to Red Sox rallies. The two-run difference in the game boiled down to Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s throwing error in the third. With the bases loaded and none out the backstop had the notion to pick Jose Bautista off first base. His throw went galley-west into right and Brett Lawrie and Rajai Davis made their way across the plate. Salty just got momentarily distracted. You would too if giant pizzas floated in your peripheral vision. A strong April is nothing to sniff at and neither is any game against a divisional opponent. Even Hub sports fans can agree the more important Boston-Toronto match-up is happening on an even faster surface than AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D. Go Bruins! The Shane Show

Ryan Dempster pitched to his son before the game. The placid scene brought a moment of normalcy back to what has been turbulents times in Boston. The tot is already a better hitter than his father. While Mike Carp impressed on the offensive side Shane Victorino dazzled with his bat and glove. The Mauian went 3-for-3 with two runs. When Lonnie Chisenhall tried to stretch a single into a double in the third Victorino soundly disabused him of his extra base aspirations with an outfield assist. Victorino also staunched an incipient rally in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two down Asdrubal Cabrera launched the ball into Victorino’s range. The right fielder snared the ball on his backhand headed towards the fences.
