Clap On, Clap Off

Jerry Remy’s nickname for Francisco Cervelli, the Pest, while apt, doesn’t have the zing that Boston Dirt Dogs’ moniker does. In response to Cervelli’s trained seal impersonation at home plate in the fifth inning the Yankees catcher was dubbed “the Yankee Clapper.” Give Cervelli a standing ovation, ladies and gentlemen. That was his third home run. In his career. (He made his major league debut in 2008 but didn’t have appreciable at bats until 2009.) John Lackey stuck a four-seamer in Cervelli’s spine when he led off the seventh inning. Rather than take his base the backstop made a move to the mound only to be blocked by Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s sizable bulk. The benches cleared and the bullpens made their way to the infield but no blows were exchanged. The retaliatory pitch bit the local nine in the end as Cervelli advanced on a passed ball, proceeded to third on Brett Gardner’s bunt single, and scored when Derek Jeter grounded into a double play. The extra run would yield the game’s final score, 5-2. It was amazing the brawl wasn’t more lively. The game opened with Curtis Granderson not getting a base in the first inning as home plate umpire...

Stalemate

Against every other team besides the Red Sox when CC Sabathia starts victory is a cakewalk. Sabathia has six losses; four of them were delivered by Boston, one by Detroit, and one by Tampa Bay. The hefty hurler pitched a Lackeyan line: 6 innings, 9 hits, 7 earned runs, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. Part of the local nine’s two-run attack in the third featured one of Dustin Pedroia’s signature slides. The second baseman knocked the ball off the left field wall at that angle that is the difference between a single for a slow runner and a double for a swift one. Pedroia decided go for the double. He had to slide around the bag to avoid Robinson Cano’s tag, shifting from his right to his left hand to stay in contact with the bag as his momentum carried him past the keystone sack. Joe Buck, Tim McCarver, and the Fox crew desperately replayed every angle in slow motion to prove that Pedroia should have been out but to no avail. Pedroia pounded the infield dirt in triumph as Jarrod Saltalamacchia touched home for the second run of the inning. The Red Sox pummeled Sabathia for five more runs...

CC Oh Enemy

I imagine most male readers won’t be familiar with the hand-clapping songs that girls like me played while we waited in line for lunch or to pass the time while riding the bus to school. There were two flavors of “See See Oh ———” songs, one for playmates and one for enemies. When I think of CC Sabathia I always think of the latter. See see oh enemyCome out and fight with meAnd bring your weapons threeClimb up my poison treeSlide down my razor bladeAnd through my dungeon doorAnd we’ll be enemiesFor ever more more shut-the-dungeon-door Another version:Say say old enemyCome out and fight with meAnd bring your BB gunAnd we’ll have lots of funI’ll scratch your eyes outAnd make you bleed to deathAnd we’ll be jolly enemiesForever evermore Such is training for grade school girls to become cruel teenagers. I picture Henrik and Daniel Sedin singing these chants while they sit cross-legged across from each other, a odd mirror of floppery. The three-hour, 27-minute rain delay didn’t entirely dampen the Bronx fan base. Yankee fans were tantalized by Curtis Granderson’s two-run bomb in the first inning. A surprising number stayed until the seventh inning instead of leaving early with...

Fatboy Versus Slim

How badly could a game have gone to prefer that it ended in the fifth inning with the score 6-3 in favor of the Yankees instead of playing out the full nine? How about Mark Teixeira, who chose the Yankees over the Red Sox, blasting two more home runs in the late innings? Not that the third longball should count since it came off Jonathan Van Every. How about the fact that Terry Francona even sent Van Every to the mound, the first position player to pitch in a Red Sox/Yankees game ever? The concept of run prevention was assiduously applied, but not to Yankees’ offense. The local nine scored in a single inning. Darnell McDonald, one of the few bright chapters in the otherwise dreary tome of the Red Sox’s season thus far, knocked a solo homer with one out in the third. C.C. Sabathia then induced a fly ball out off the bat of Marco Scutaro. With two out in the inning and a slim one-run lead, Sabathia sought revenge for his teammates who were hit by Josh Beckett in the series opener. Sabathia ignored the fact that no one in their right minds thought Beckett was intentionally...

Ainote [合いの手]

Game 154: September 26, 2009 Red Sox0L: Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-6)91-63, 2 game losing streak Yankees3W: C.C. Sabathia (19-7)H: Phil Hughes (18)S: Mariano Rivera (43)99-56, 4 game winning streak Highlights: Ainote is a virtuoso musical interlude in kabuki dramas played on the shamisen. While this music is worthy of the audience’s attention, it is there as an embellishment and accompaniment to the actors’ movements. Although Matsuzaka held the Yankees to one run over seven innings, he was overshadowed by Sabathia’s consummate performance: 7 innings, 1 hit, 2 walks, and 8 strikeouts. How the Yankees Ruined My Vacation, Part Two: I did it again. Despite another flawless day in Laughlin I sequestered myself in my room to watch the middle game of the series. C.C. Sabathia held the Red Sox hitless until the fifth inning. To lead off Mike Lowell grounded a single to center but was stranded at second base after he stole it (Jose Molina was doing his best Jason Varitek impersonation). For the second game in a row Derek Jeter was cut off by diving plays by Boston infielders. In the bottom of the fifth with the bases loaded and none out Alex Rodriguez clipped the ball and it...

Scalped

ALCS Game 1: October 12, 2007 Indians 3 L: C.C. Sabathia (1-1) ALDS: 3-1ALCS: 0-1 Red Sox 10 W: Josh Beckett (2-0) ALDS: 3-0ALCS: 1-0 Highlights: I do not play “Dirty Water” before a win is official. It is not a rallying song; it is the imprimatur of an official win. Any other use of it should be frowned upon. I’m looking your way, Fox. Manny Ramirez joined Jim Palmer in baseball history despite Fox’s worst intentions; they are the only two players to have walked with the bases loaded twice in a postseason game. So, of course Fox played the buoyant ditty after Mike Lowell's inning-ending double play in the first. It took a mocking tone in that context, even though the local nine had managed to tie the game with an array of sharp grounders and smoking ropes up the middle. Dustin Pedroia, sparkplug that he is, began by spanking a pitch right back to C.C. Sabathia. Perhaps the close brush unnerved him. Perhaps, despite the dominance Sabathia demonstrated in his regular season campaign, he wilts in the postseason (for he should have lost his start against the Yankees in the ALDS but the Bronx Bombers bombed...
