Midafternoon of the Living Dead

Ricky Romero pitched a horrific first inning, as gruesome as a zombie apocalypse flick for the dozens of Blue Jays fans lightly spread across the Great White North. The local nine scored four runs before Romero got a batter out. After batting around back to Daniel Nava, who led off with a base on balls, the Red Sox had a six-run lead. David Ortiz added to the carnage in the fifth with one out and none on, by which time Romero was long gone. The designated hitter was deliciously close to clubbing his 400th career home run in this game. His 399th circuit clout came courtesy of Jesse Chavez. The shot cleared the Red Sox bullpen and ball became a treasured keepsake of a lucky Fenway fan in the low bleachers who can tell the story about how she was one away from Papi’s 400th. Ortiz may hit the quadricentennial mark in Seattle, the team that signed him as an amateur free agent in 1992, so the milestone may happen with storybook circularity. While Yankee pitchers were dropping like flies Clay Buchholz was released from the hospital after his five-day stay. Buchholz had esophagitis and gastrointestinal bleeding, illnesses that weakened...

Babalú-Ayé

Ricky Romero makes me think of Ricky Ricardo. Desi Arnaz and his orchestra popularized “Babalu,” a Cuban song about the Santería diety Babalú-Ayé. “I Love Lucy” fans bopping along with the tune probably didn’t realize that they were enjoying a song about a being from an exotic, syncretic religion as they didn’t have the Google. Not only is Babalú-Ayé from a belief system that mainstream Americans from the 1940s would find alien but the spirit (orisha, in Santerian vocabulary) is associated with epidemics and disease. Oddly enough, Babalú-Ayé also heals maladies. In this particular orisha yin and yang is commingled in one being. Romero had two selves battling in him, one that didn’t last five innings against the Red Sox twice last season and the other who allowed Boston four runs in the game but held on for seven more innings two times. Yesterday a third emerged: 8⅓ innings pitched, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Jon Lester gave the ailing bullpen a rest but couldn’t prevail against Romero’s stifling stuff. He had the best start of any Red Sox starter so far this season: 8 innings, 3 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 bases on balls,...

Rehabilitation (No, No, No)

Don Orsillo resurrected a tie of similar style to those he wore on May 4, June 11, and June 30. The retreading of similar styles reminds me of the multiple attempts to rehabilitate Andrew Miller. It seems clear by now that the sixth pick of the 2006 draft did not warrant that honor. Miller surrendered five earned runs and over five innings but surprisingly just walked two batters. It was two home runs early in the game that did him in. A sampling of players drafted after Miller: Clayton Kershaw, Tim Lincecum, Max Scherzer, Ian Kennedy, and Daniel Bard. The same has been said about Ricky Romero, who was the sixth pick in the stacked 2005 amateur draft. Instead of Romero the Blue Jays could have had Troy Tulowitzki, Cameron Maybin, Andrew McCutchen, Jay Bruce, Jacoby Ellsbury, or Matt Garza. The way the Red Sox are playing I’m beginning to wonder if they are contenders or pretenders. They have lost the last three series: Yankees, Rangers, and Blue Jays. Two of those teams will be in the playoffs. The Boston baseball squad will likely be in the postseason as well, but this spate of poor play and injuries gives one...

Ricky Don’t Lose That Number

We hear you’re leaving, that’s okayI thought our little wild time had just begunI guess you kind of scared yourself, you turn and runBut if you have a change of heart“Ricky Don’t Lose That Number,” Steely Dan The Red Sox have Ricky Romero’s number and when it’s called the Blue Jays inevitably lose. The splits show that Romero is a very good pitcher that has problems when facing Boston and Detroit. Tim Wakefield is two wins closer to 200, something that could be in jeopardy if Jarrod Saltalamacchia keeps allowing passed balls (three total last night). Jacoby Ellsbury and Kevin Youkilis both had three hits against the lefty. Ellsbury led off the home half of the first with a longball that cleared the visitors’ bullpen to tie the game. Youkilis broke the tie in the next inning by firing a homer into the Monster seats that had such velocity that a fan sidestepped the ball rather than risk bruised or broken fingers for a souvenir. Toronto briefly took the lead in the top of the third but the local nine roared back in the fourth with four runs. With two down Romero allowed J.D. Drew to double off the grill...
