Goofus & Gallant

On the very first pitch of the game Nick Markakis laced the ball to left field. Third base umpire Will Little ruled the ball fair. Multiple replays showed that the ball was foul. John Farrell challenged the call Goofus umpiring crew in MLB headquarters upheld the call and Markakis tallied a double. In the eighth inning Brock Holt knocked the ball to Steve Lombardozzi. First base umpire Mark Carlson called Holt out. Replays showed that Holt got to the first base bag a split second before the ball reached Chris Davis’s glove. Gallant umpiring crew in MLB headquarters overruled Carlson’s call and Holt was safe at first. Goofuses on the Red Sox side were John Lackey (5⅓ innings pitched, 6 earned runs, 4 walks, 6 strikeouts) and the Red Sox lineup with runners in scoring position (5-for-15). Bucking the Trend

Since assuming the helm of the floundering Orioles organization Buck Showalter has reversed the team’s course. Baltimore is 28-17 since August 3. Over the same period the Red Sox are 23-21, but more than a handful of the losses seemed like they should have been wins. The opening game of the this series was one of those eminently winnable games. The local nine tied the game twice. Hot-hitting Victor Martinez starched a single in the bottom of the first to plate Darnell McDonald and knot the run tally 1-1. In the bottom of the sixth the Red Sox had all the fixings for a home-cooked rally: Mike Lowell walked with one out and Jed Lowrie was hit by a pitch to push Lowell into scoring position. Bill Hall blooped in Lowell with a single to right. Lowell was able to reach home on the single because Nick Markakis clumsily tripped and bobbled the ball. Lowrie reached third on the miscue. Markakis’s mistake was countered by Lowrie’s baserunning blunder. On Jason Varitek’s strikeout Matt Wieters fired to shortstop Cesar Izturis to tag Hall, who was part of a failed hit and run. Izturis noticed Lowrie breaking for home and threw back...

Fledglings

Game 95: July 24, 2009 Orioles1L: Brad Bergesen (6-5)41-54, 4 game losing streak Red Sox3W: Brad Penny (7-4)H: Manny Delcarmen (6)H: Hideki Okajima (19)S: Jonathan Papelbon (25)56-39, 1 game winning streak Highlights: The name Bergesen is a patronym of Birger, a given name in Swedish that means one who saves, protects, or helps. The Orioles starter did just that against the Red Sox until the fourth inning. They began the first three innings with the lead runner on but in the fourth it finally paid off. J.D. Drew lined a single to the middle of the field and advanced to third on Mike Lowell’s line drive double to left. Brian Roberts tried to knock down Jason Varitek’s sharp grounder before it got into the infield but it evaded his outstretched (as much as the diminutive can stretch) arm. Nick Markakis had no play at home since Drew took a lead off third and was headed home when the ball got past Roberts. Lowell also jogged to third on the playWith the game tied, Jed Lowrie lofted the ball deep enough into right so that even Markakis couldn’t make a play on Lowell tagging up to give the Red Sox the...

Stranded

Game 34: May 11, 2007 Orioles 6 W: Brian Burres (1-1)H: Todd Williams (1)H: John Parrish (6)H: Chad Bradford (7)H: Jamie Walker (6)S: Chris Ray (8) 18-18, 4 game winning streak5-6-1 series record Red Sox 3 L: Julian Tavarez (1-4) 23-11, 1 game losing streak9-2-2 series record Highlights: Javier Lopez, recalled from Pawtucket to replace Devern Hansack, pitched a perfect sixth inning. Julio Lugo had a 3-for-5 evening while Coco Crisp and Kevin Youkilis both went 2-for-5 with a double apiece, but the remainder of the lineup was stagnant. Crisp’s double clanged about the garage door in left field, one of those quirky Fenway hits. Nick Markakis was born one year after Wily Mo Peña, although the former was born late in 1983 while Peña was born in the beginning of 1982. Much is made of Peña being rushed through the ranks because he was signed to a major league contract. He hacked his way through the Gulf Coast League to the MLB in just three years, from 1999 to 2002. Meanwhile, Markakis was drafted in 2001 and 2002 by the Cincinnati Reds, but he decided to go to Young Harris College both years. When the Orioles drafted him...
