Happy Anniversary

It was one year ago this past Sunday that Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, and Nick Punto were sent to the Dodgers for James Loney, Ivan De Jesus Jr., Allen Webster and two players that were later confirmed to be Rubby De La Rosa and Jerry Sands. Both teams currently lead their divisions so it seems to be one of those deals that worked out well for both parties. Although it probably wasn’t expected that the Red Sox could turn their listing ship aright so quickly. The prospects Boston received who have played this season weren’t particularly stellar, filling a need in the depleted pitching staff when necessary. Webster doesn’t seem ready this season but seems to profile as a fourth or fifth starter. De La Rosa has been erratic but, as Dennis Eckersley would say, has the cheese to party. Jake Peavy brought the cheese all game save for a fastball he teed up for Adrian Gonzalez in the fourth. The four-bagger was the only extra base hit Peavy relinquished and was one of only three hits to boot. Peavy was likely motivated by his San Diego roots to perform well against the Dodgers. Perhaps Gonzalez wished to...

Showdown at Chavez Ravine

Two division-leading teams entered Dodger Stadium last night but only one left. Boston’s loss and Tampa Bay’s win over the Yankees leave the AL East tied, but the Red Sox are two behind in the loss column. The Red Sox lineup hit like pitchers last night. Only Dustin Pedroia and Stephen Drew tallied hits. John Lackey managed to foul off a ball, which Dennis Eckersley would count as “styling.” Carl Crawford is the Dodgers’ leadoff hitter because it is much easier to do so on the West Coast. He started the fourth inning with a line drive single to right and had a chance to tell David Ortiz how much he wanted to beat the Red Sox. “That was just a bad experience,” the outfielder said. “I definitely felt like I had a chance to get a fresh start. With a new team, new atmosphere, new environment.” Because that isn’t what he got when he went from the Rays to the Red Sox. Dustin Pedroia and Adrian Gonzalez had a footrace to first in the fourth inning that Pedroia nearly won. There couldn’t be two more different players than this pair. Pedroia is boisterous, obstreperous, and spirited while Gonzalez is...

L.A. Beaten

Sundays are supposed to be leisurely but Clay Buchholz’s day was anything but. The Red Sox offense, so potent in the first two games of the series, strung together just two runs for the spindly starter. Dustin Pedroia singled with one out in the first, a grounder that bounced off Casey Blake’s glove towards Jamey Carroll. With David Ortiz batting Joe Torre put on the shift. Pedroia was offended by Torre’s tactic; didn’t that manager know that blinding speed was one of the weapons in Pedroia’s vast arsenal of baseball weaponry? The Red Sox second baseman bolted for second and continued on to third after his pop-up slide as no one backed up the hot corner. Torre intentionally walked Ortiz to get to Kevin Youkilis, who called “two ball, corner pocket” in the batter’s box. The Red Sox first baseman cunningly cued the ball down the third base line and Blake’s only move was to hope it bent foul. Instead the ball skipped along the line and hit the third base bag for a single, scoring Pedroia. The only other run came in the third inning. Marco Scutaro led off with a single to center, advanced to third on Pedroia’s...

Pedey’s Big Adventure

The middle game of this series turned out to be a tug-o-war of wills between the two lineups. Manny Ramirez led off the second with a single, swiped second, and scored on a single to right by the reanimated corpse of Garret Anderson that Bill Hall failed to stop from skipping past him. Of the myriad positions Hall can field, right field is the spot he has played the least; in 821 games started Hall has a mere 15 starts in right. Add to that novelty the difficult sun field of late afternoon games at Fenway and unsurprisingly Hall had two errors. The second error came in the seventh. Anderson, still powered by some dark art, lifted a ground-rule double to right and scored on Blake DeWitt’s double to right. Hall incorrectly played the carom of DeWitt’s ball, following it too closely as it hugged the curve in the wall rather than allowing the ball to come to him. Anderson scored to cut the home team’s lead to a run and DeWitt made it to the hot corner. Tim Wakefield was in line for the win when Manny Delcarmen took the mound with one out in the seventh. Maybe the...

Doubront-ain of Youth

With the Red Sox rotation down two starters the team has had to tap into their minor league resources. Felix Doubront, signed as an international free agent out of Venezuela in 2004, started with perfect first and second innings. But before Doubront touched off a wave of Doubrontmania the Dodgers got to him in the third, led by Ronnie Belliard’s double and ending with a 3-3 tie at the end of the third. After five innings the rookie starter left with a fair line: 6 hits, 5 runs (3 earned), 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. The two unearned runs were the result of his own missed catch of a flip from Kevin Youkilis; he must appreciate the scoring rule that states that pitchers’ errors do not count toward earned run average. David Ortiz’s 15th homer of the season was his 274th with the Red Sox, coincidentally tying him with none other than Manny Ramirez for fifth in career circuit clouts with the club. Ramirez’s reception was surprisingly warm given the animosity many felt when he all but forced his way out of town two years ago. In those two years, however, Red Sox fans have seen two unsuccessful playoff campaigns....

Keeping the East at Bay

He’s gone now. Instead of the Marlins, it was the Dodgers who were the white knights of the deal. The Red Sox receive Jason Bay as previously stated and will pay the remainder of Ramirez’s salary. Manny Ramirez will play in Chavez Ravine, and the Pirates acquire: From the Dodgers: Andy LaRoche, Adam’s brother and promising third base prospect Bryan Morris, a right-handed pitcher in Class A From the Red Sox: Craig Hansen, 2005 first round pick that needs to be salvaged Brandon Moss, outfielder that had no spot in Boston’s current lineup The Marlins got too greedy and asked for the Red Sox to add more money and three prospects to send to the Bucs to the deal while they would surrender Jeremy Hermida and only one minor leaguer.I’m not sure what to think of the entire thing yet except that Scott Boras is a scourge on the sport of baseball....

Dodgy Accusations

“I’m rubber and you’re glue: whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you,” said the Red Sox front office in response to the Dodgers’ allegations of tampering in the J.D. Drew signing. Boston countered with charges that Grady Little and Dave Jauss, both former Red Sox employees, attempted to contact Manny Ramirez. The Red Sox allege that either Little or Jauss and perhaps both contacted a current Red Sox staff member to acquire Ramirez’s home phone number. I’m sure it was because they just wanted to wish the left fielder happy holidays and see how Juliana and the son were doing. I don’t have a lot of confidence in the Dodgers’ executive decision making. They canned Paul DePodesta after just one season to go with the more conventional Ned Colletti. Whatever DePodesta may have lacked in media savvy he made up for in his statistical abilities (I found this fine and thoughtful analysis of his very brief tenure by Daniel Julien), but newbie owner Frank McCourt had not the patience to persevere with DePodesta. There’s also the debt service McCourt assumed in acquiring the Dodgers. The real estate developer has to sell 24 acres of land to pay...
