In-Shane in the Membrane

Our favorite Maui boy Shane Victorino went 4-for-5 with five runs batted in. He got the team off to a lead with his first-inning solo shot. Victorino’s personal success (he tied his personal record of RBIs in a game) led to the team’s triumph (he accounted for half of the offensive production in the club’s 10-6 win). To mix things up Victorino tried to throw out Miguel Cabrera on the slugger’s seventh-inning single. You do what you can to get the former MVP out somehow. Victorino’s performance somewhat masked Jon Lester’s continuing struggles. The southpaw’s line (5⅔ innings, 9 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts) shows that Lester has yet to return to his early-season dominance. Then again, it is difficult for any pitcher to do well against the Tigers’ potent lineup. Cabrera’s three-run homer in the fifth was as surprising as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west. Paws, the Tigers mascot, visited the stands. I could have sworn Brandon Inge was at the game, but he’s with the Pirates. Jenny Dell pitched Red Sox wines produced by a company called Wine by Design. Perhaps it would be more appropriate if it...

Aaron’s Cookies

These fans’ bucket list went unfinished as the Red Sox dropped the last game of this series to the Tigers. Aaron Cook was hit hard by Detroit’s batters in the fifth, with sluggers Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder capping off the five-run onslaught with consecutive circuit clouts. Fielder demonstrated full recovery from getting hit with a pickoff in the fourth inning. He had writhed about as if mortally wounded but his dramatic gyrations were more soccer than serious. NESN is looking for a producer for a day in a rather interesting contest. The winner may score “any of the following unique NESN experiences: one inning in the NESN broadcast booth with Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy; one inning in the 3rd base photographer’s well with Jenny Dell; one inning with a NESN cameraman; one inning in the NESN broadcast truck; and other ballpark experiences as determined by NESN.” But can they pick songs with Peter Grenier? It was a disappointing end to an otherwise winning series, but at least Jacoby Ellsbury (1-for-4 with a double and a walk) and Carl Crawford (1-for-5 with a home run) are starting to show power at the top of the lineup. Ellsbury made a...

Triple Doubles

Miguel Cabrera had three doubles but didn’t help his team win. Rajon Rondo missed a triple double by two rebounds and very nearly led the Celtics to victory. Jon Lester almost brought his personal win-loss record to .500 but left Matt Albers a runner at second with two out in the seventh. Albers surrendered a single to pinch hitter Andy Dirks and then Cabrera’s third two-bagger of the night brought Gerald Laird home to tie the game 4-4. Adrian Gonzalez countered in the home half of the frame with an RBI ground-rule double to right field that proved that Brennan Boesch played this particular batter too shallow. In the eighth Boesch shaded Will Middlebrooks too deep and the third baseman singled to right. No one could have played Middlebrooks’s home run in the bottom of the fourth, a line drive shot that came in so fast not even eager souvenir seekers could contain it. According to Steve Berthiaume it was the fastest home run from bat to seats, covering the distance in just 2.84 seconds. The two-run homer plated Kevin Youkilis; odd to think that Youkilis helped pad the stats of batter that might render him expendable. Youkilis...

Detroit Jock City

Detroit showcased its prodigious offense, a slugging lineup that was bolstered by Prince Fielder when Victor Martinez suffered a season-ending injury this past January. Fielder joined Miguel Cabrera in swatting two homers in yesterday’s rout of the visiting Red Sox. The Tigers duo of Fielder and Cabrera not only torment ace pitchers with their bats, their combined appetites could easily revitalize Detroit’s restaurant scene. Josh Beckett did nothing to allay doubts about his commitment to the game after the end of the season fiasco of which he is considered a primary author. He had thumb discomfort that had him seeking the advice of physicians but Beckett’s atrociousness was not due to injury. His command of the strike zone wasn’t a match for Cabrera and Fielder’s power strokes. Even Alex Avila, a catcher with moderate power, got to Boston’s right-handed starter. Beckett’s shakiness was not the only sign of playing off the offseason rust. In the bottom of the sixth Jacoby Ellsbury ran down Jhonny Peralta’s liner to shallow center, displaying his typical speed but failing to hold onto the ball once it was in his glove. With the bases loaded and one out in seventh Peralta grounded out to third....
